SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY COMMITTEE

September 5, 2010

Present: Peggy B, Sandy W, Ken M, Dave C, Mavis C, John L, Toyan C, Libby R

Toyan presided over the meeting which began at about 11:40 am at UUCWI.

The following matters were discussed and/or decided upon:

STANDING ON THE SIDE OF LOVE:

It was decided that the Committee’s theme for the year, to be emphasized at each of the three services for which it is responsible, is “Standing on the Side of Love.” This is inspired by the public advocacy campaign of the same name sponsored by UUA which seeks to harness love’s power to stop oppression. UUA and the Committee believe that no one should be dehumanized through acts of exclusion, oppression, or violence because of their identities. In public debates over immigration, LGBT rights, and more, religious people stand on the side of love and call for respect, inclusion, and compassion. SRC intends to include veterans and their particular needs in this campaign.

T-Shirts – Mavis C agreed to order yellow “Standing on the Side of Love” T-shirts being sold by UUA for those who express an interest in ordering one. It is hoped people will then wear them to the three SRC-sponsored services.

Banner – Dave C agreed to order a “Standing on the Side of Love” banner for display at the entrance sign for the three SRC-sponsored services.

SUNDAY SERVICES:

SRC has responsibility for three services during this new church year: November 14, January 16 and March 6.

November 14 Service – The focus will be on the matter of immigration. Libby agreed to work with Bill G and John L to find a speaker for this service who can relate this difficult issue to the local economy and people. Ken M will be responsible for the music for that service. The Lay Leader is yet to be determined.

January 16 and March 6 Services – One service will focus on same-sex marriage (Toyan will ask Kit to assist us in finding a speaker) and the other will focus on veterans (Ken will find a speaker).

FILM CO-SPONSORSHIP

UUCWI is co-sponsoring, with LUMC, the free public showing of the film “For the Bible Tells Me So” at the Clyde Theater on Sunday, October 10 at 2 pm. SRC agreed to contribute $75 for the costs associated with this, as requested by LUMC.

DEDICATED OFFERINGS

SRC agreed that dedicated offerings will be made as follows:

September 12 Habitat for Humanity

October 24 Friends of Friends

November 14 Veterans Resource Center

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

John L reported that the house currently being built is nearing completion. HFH needs volunteers for the landscaping there. He will ask the UUCWI landscape committee if they can forego their work in September at the church and, instead, work at the new house.

The meeting adjourned at 1 pm.
