| OAK HARBOR NEWSLETTER
April, 2007
Opening Day will be Sunday, April 29. The boat parade begins at 1pm. The Oak Harbor Yacht Club sponsors Spring Series Sailboat Races on Thursday nights in April (5, 12, 19, 26) beginning with a skipper’s meeting at 4pm. The entry fee is $20. For more information, call Dave French at 678-1799 or e-mail at grins@whidbey.net Pelican Fleet Championships—Saturday April 14 Crew Overboard Exercise April 14 Oak Harbor boaters are invited to a class on crew overboard techniques with actual "on the water" recovery exercises Saturday, April 14 at the Oak Harbor marina. There will be some dock time to demonstrate how to retrieve a person and then practice of several on-the-water retrievals. It will be a great day on the water, weather permitting. Meet at E Dock, Slip 63 at the Oak Harbor Marina at 10:30am. This will be on a first-come basis. Please contact Allen Parks (email: gray447@earthlink.net) or Gary McIntyre (Email: mcintyre.g@cablespeed.com) ASAP if you are interested. Based on actual studies and exercises, successful crew overboard recoveries are more certain when skipper and crew have practiced recovery techniques with their boat and equipment. Given the hazards and cold waters of our boating region, making preparations and exercising crew recovery techniques is good and prudent seamanship. Waterloo—the floating toilets are back in place at the north end of F float. Marina staffing—On March 29 interviews are being conducted with applicants for part-time and seasonal work. Next month we will report on who is hired. Deception Pass Sail & Power Squadron presents an Experienced Boater Course on Saturday May 12. The four hour accelerated course will qualify you for the new Washington State Boater Education Card. Contact Bob Nelson to reserve your spot in the class. The Power Squadron is also presenting the 2nd Safe Boating Expo on Saturday May 19, 2007. Events include: fire extinguisher demonstration, expired flare shoot off, life raft deployment, US Navy Search and Rescue, North Whidbey fire and Rescue boat, and Safe boating for children including free life jackets. There is also a Marine Swap Meet along the back fence. Contact Steve Williford at 279.1551 for more information.
Marina Redevelopment—there are some significant permits that the City needs. Due to the length of time required for approval, it is expected that construction will begin on September 2, 2008. The table below summarizes the permits including the regulatory agency and how long each is expected to take to be approved.
Mack Funk, Harbormaster
