WHALE LAKE

One of the most beautiful places in the North Cascades.  This is another very remote and seldom visited lake.  The extreme difficulty in the approach is doubtless the reason why.  The lake is named Whale because when viewed from the air is it shaped like a cartoon whale.  At least that seems the most plausible reason for the name.  It could be the fish as well.  I caught the largest trout in my life at this lake.  The camps are comfortable and blessed with fabulous mountain views.  Out across the lake, Hidden Peak appears in the distance.  The lake lies in a bowl protected by the jagged peaks on three sides.  I have been there in good weather and in bad, but even bad wasn't THAT bad because of the protection of the peaks.  Mosquitos were plentiful though so carry repellent.

The first part of the approach is via the trail to Enjar Lake.  At the trail junction start up the steep mountain and climb to the sky.  It may be overstated a slight bit but you will think the ascent will reach the sky.  The destination is a gorgeous lake, true, but you really should take the time to enjoy the beautiful meadows near the pass.  Here the grade moderates and begins a winding ascent through open meadows blanketed in wildflowers, and criss-crossed by crystal streams. There is no trail so just keep picking your way toward the pass.  The way will eventually narrow among huge boulders, fallen from the cliffs above to the right and top the pass.  The panorama from the top is worth a lengthy pause.  Drop down the narrow chute to the lake, about 900 feet below.  Enjoy the solitude of one of God's finest places.

From Seattle drive north on Interstate 5 to exit 230.  Follow State Route 20 east to Rockport.  Turn south on Highway 530 to Illabot Creek Road, about four miles.  Illabot Creek Road is an active logging road and is steep and rough.  Watch for log trucks. The trailhead is between milepost 20 and 21 at the bridge crossing Otter Creek.  Otter Creek is very interesting.  Below Slide Lake the creek runs underground to just above the bridge.  Explore a little.
